Scientists have studied the optimal length of sleep and were able to make an unexpected discovery. In their opinion, sleeping 6 hours a day is even worse than suffering from insomnia.
They found that the most favorable for complete recovery of the brain and maintaining cognitive abilities is sleep for 8 hours.
Specialists from the University of Pennsylvania conducted a study comparing insomnia and short-term sleep. 48 voluntary participants aged 21 to 48 years were invited for observation, all of them were healthy, had no problems with sleep. For the experiment, the respondents were divided into three subgroups, giving the task of the first subgroup to sleep only 4 hours a day, while the participants in the second subgroup had the opportunity to sleep for 6 hours, and the third had a full 8-hour night sleep.
The experiment took two weeks. During this period, every two hours during the wakefulness of the respondents, scientists assessed their cognitive abilities with the help of tests. It turned out that only those who slept for 8 hours showed the best results. The average result was shown by the participants in the first subgroup, who slept only 4 hours a day. Unexpectedly for the scientists themselves, the worst result was found in those who had the opportunity to sleep for 6 hours. Their results were almost equal to those of people who had insomnia and could not sleep for two consecutive days.
In relation to sleep, scientists also found that daytime sleep without reducing the time for night rest helps reduce the pressure and risk of diseases of the cardiovascular system.
